Yoga—What are Your Thoughts?

Yoga is all the rage in fitness circles and gyms throughout the country. Doctors and scientists are banding together to point out the health benefits of this practice, some even to the extent of recommending yoga to their patients. I must admit that the promised relief from stiff and inflexible muscles sounds tempting to me. Many Christians, however, see yoga as evil. Obviously, I agree that any yoga combined with spirituality is something that must be avoided. But what if you take the spiritual component out? Or is that even possible? Could certain movements of the body be inherently evil?

My Mom gave me a yoga workout DVD—Yoga for Dummies. I have watched this DVD and there was no apparent spirituality in it. It seemed to be a very cut and dry explanation of stretching techniques, many which I recognized as sports stretches I had done in track and swimming in high school. It certainly didn’t seem evil. So I don’t know what to think. I definitely don’t want to open myself up to demonic influences or worship Hindu ‘gods’. But I really struggle with this question—how could something that has been shown to be so good for the body and to have numerous health benefits, be completely evil? Any thoughts?

Placement Tests and Plane Rides

Tomorrow is a busy day! It's the day I take the MAT (Miller Analogies Test- like the SAT's, but for grad school). Yuck! After that, I will be flying to NC to join my husband who has been there since Saturday. I will be there Thursday through Sunday, so I will get to pay a visit to some friends, my family, and some of my favorite restaurants :) In other news, my throat has been a bit scratchy all day, and now my nose is feeling a little stuffy too. I hope I'm not getting sick. Now would not be a good time for that. On that note, I think I'm going to head to bed. I need to be well rested for my test, and to shake off this congestion, and because I will be flying all through the night tomorrow and probably won't be getting much sleep. Please pray for me as I take the test, and for our safety as we travel. Cheers!

This picture just does not capture it, but the pass through the Cascades on I90 is quite possibly one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world. And all of this is only 50 miles from my wonderful city :)

Birthdays

I was thinking a lot about birthdays, and I think it is dumb for people to be upset about getting older. Why would you be upset that God has given you another year of life? It is a magnificent gift! Celebrate it!

Yesterday was my 26th birthday. To celebrate, we went out to eat at the Olive Garden. There were 4 birthdays being celebrated there last night, including one at the table right next to us! I felt kind of guilty telling them it was my birthday—I felt like they thought I was lying just so I could get a free desert (they did in fact charge me for the desert, which further confirms my suspicions). But they came out and sang to me, which was lots of fun.

Props to Ned for making my birthday special. He came home from work with a Starbucks cupcake, an Elvis card, and a candle set that I had seen a month ago and said was cute—he remembered it all this time! Then we went out to a fabulous dinner.

Ned started his new job yesterday. It’s not for the company I mentioned before, but it is for a company that builds the same caliber houses. The one they showed him the day of his interview had 6 fireplaces, a fire pole in one of the kids’ bedrooms, and an entire wall that was an aquarium in the other kid’s bedroom! Talk about a cool house! His boss is pretty cool too- once he found out it was my birthday, he kicked Ned off the job and told him to go home to me at once! Too bad he didn’t find out until 4:30.

In other news, the mysterious free cable we had in our apartment is no more. For some reason, when we moved in, we had cable! We never buy cable, so this was a special treat for us. We got to watch the Olympics, as well as other not so noble shows. It in fact became a small addiction, and we had even discussed maybe doing a fast from it. Well lo and behold, this weekend it shut itself off. It is better for me, I’m sure, but I do still have some withdrawal. Especially since I do not yet have a job and days can be long and boring. Oh well! Guess I will have to find better things to do with my time. Like blog :)
